- The limbic system: the brain region located on either side of the thalamus, just under the cerebrum. It includes the hypothalamus, the hippocampus, the amygdala, and several other nearby areas.
- The neocortex is the region of the cerebral cortex involved with hearing and sight in mammals. The neocortex is regarded as the most recently evolved part of the cortex.
- While the classification of emotions into basic and higher is no longer used in dominant psychological theories today, connecting evidence from neuroscience, evolutionary biology, physiology, culture studies, and psychology shows that two opposite poles of emotions exist.
- They are basic (or lower) emotions associated with the limbic system. These basic emotions that appeared earlier in evolution have clear physiological manifestations, universally recognized facial expressions and body postures; are culturally typical; appear earlier in individual development; and are more irrational and unconscious.
