Introduction

This Workbook is designed to guide you through the subject content and learning activities and to prepare you to get the most out of this Intensive (on-campus activities). The learning activities in this book are designed to encourage you to apply knowledge in a clinical context. By the end of this session, you will be able to:

1. Effectively use drug information resources to ensure safe medication management practices.

2. Prepare and administer oral, optic, ophthalmic, transdermal, topical and rectal medications.

3. Apply the clinical reasoning process for decision making in medication administration.

4. Manage work environments to minimize challenges to the implementation of medication safety through a structured medication management process.

5. Use techniques for communicating for safety in medication management, including legally accepted medication abbreviations, verbal communication.

6. Identify relevant ethical issues and legislation related to medication administration (including scheduling).

7. Identify the professional responsibilities of the registered nurse in medication management.

8. Demonstrate best practice approaches for educating patients about medications.

Case
Doris is rating her pain 5/10. She has an order for paracetamol 500mg and codeine phosphate 30mg modified release 1-2 tabs orally 4-6 hourly.

Jennifer’s right eye is red with purulent discharge conjunctivitis. She has an order for Gentamicin eye drops (Genetic) 3mg/mL solution, 1 drop in right eye QID.
