Part 1: Assessment Instructions

Assessment task introduction

To complete this part of the assessment, you are required to apply your knowledge and demonstrate a range of skills when organizing personal work placement tasks.

When: You will complete this task before and during their work placement.

Where: In a regulated early childhood education and care service.

Resources and equipment: You will need access to a laptop/ tablet/computer in order to complete an electronic Work plan.

Paper and pens, access to Work Placement Supervisor, and service policies and procedures.

The student must have access to information technology; National Quality Framework and the National approved Learning Framework.

Specific assessment conditions

This assessment involves an on-the-job skills project to be undertaken in a Regulated Education and Care Service in Australia. Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in the industry capability – workplace effectiveness field of work and include access to:

  • office equipment and resources
  • work schedules and performance improvement plans
  • workplace documentation and resources
  • case studies and, where possible, real situations
  • interaction with others

Part 1. Prepare and complete a Work Plan

  1. Before commencing your Work-placement prepare a Work Plan to ensure good time management and to monitor the completion of all required tasks. You can use the Work Plan template provided at the bottom of the task instructions or use an electronic calendar or design an electronic format of your choice. If you choose to design a Work Plan template, ensure all required information as stipulated on the Work Plan provided is on your template.
  2. Use the summary of assessment tasks provided in your Work Placement Project Book to complete your Work Plan.

Assess and prioritize the tasks you need to complete in the given time frame (the number of days you will be completing your work placement).

  • Recordeachtask with the date you plan to complete it. We have provided an example of tasks you can complete before commencing your work placement on the Work Plan format provided.

*Please note that some tasks require three dates as some tasks require you to do something three times or with three different children

  • On your first day, share your Work Plan with your WP Supervisor, negotiate and agree on any changes to work practices you are required on your Work plan. Seek and act on the feedback your WP Supervisor provides. You will ask your WP Supervisor to complete the Demonstration /Third-party Report for this task before your last Assessor visit.

3. During your work placement monitor your progress and adjust your Work Plan as required. When you complete a task, insert the date you completed it.  When you have negotiated assessor visit dates with your assessor, write these on your Work Plan.  Then make adjustments where necessary to ensure tasks you are required to have ready to share with your assessor or demonstrate during their visit are prioritized correctly.

  1. Halfway through your Work Placement write a mid-way evaluation (200 words)

You must answer each of the following questions:

  • How you are managing your time and task completion?
  • What factors are affecting your progress in completing tasks?
  • What strategies are working well and what changes will you make to ensure you complete tasks on time?
  • Seek, record, and evaluate feedback from your WP Supervisor regarding your performance and time management skills.

What feedback did you receive? Record a summary of the feedback you received and state how you will act on the feedback.

  1. At the end of your work placement, write a final evaluation. (300 words) Answer each of the following questions.
  • Reflect on the effectiveness of your Work Plan. Comment on how it assisted your time management.
  • How did you deal with stress?
  • How have you recognized, analyzed, and managed unforeseen factors that have impacted your ability to complete tasks on time; include any changes you have made to the plan?
  • Give one example of when you identified, reported, and resolved issues with time management or quality of work as they arose.
  • How have you collaborated with the team and sought WP Supervisor support to achieve routine tasks?
  • What feedback have you received from your WP Supervisor at the end of your work placement?

Professional Development Plan Template

1.  Conduct a skills analysis.List all of the skills, knowledge, and qualities that you consider you have in the Professional Development Plan format. These are your identified strengths. Then using the job description as a reference, list the skills and or knowledge that you know, or think, need to be developed further. These are your identified skills and areas for improvement or potential areas of development.

For example, read a service policy to find out a specific procedure; practice telling a story to a family member to gain confidence reading to a group of children; write down the names of children and family members to try to memorize these.

Add your professional development activities to your Work Plan to ensure you implement them throughout your Work placement.

5. Mid-way evaluation

Halfway through your work placement reflect on how you are progressing towards developing your identified skill or area for improvement, answer all of the following questions:

What skills or learning have you achieved so far?

Are the activities/strategies effective or do you need to reconsider and make changes to these?

How did you approach your WP Supervisor to gain their feedback?

What feedback have you received and acted on from your WP Supervisor?

How has your learning met service requirements and job specifications?

Will you make any changes or additions to the plan?

6. Final evaluation

Evaluate your progress towards meeting your identified skill or area. Include feedback gained from your Workplace Supervisor regarding your performance and growth during your placement. What skills or learning have you achieved, did you develop the skill or area you identified?

Were the activities/strategies implemented effective or would you make changes to these if you continued to work on the identified skill or area?

What feedback do you receive from your WP Supervisor at the end of your work placement?

7. Professional development activity

At the end of work placement, identify a professional development activity that you could engage in to continue to work towards developing your skill or area for improvement.

You could ask your WP Supervisor for a suggestion or search for suitable professional development opportunities on the Internet for your local area.

Part 3: Assessment Instructions

To complete this part of the assessment you are required to apply your knowledge and demonstrate a range of skills to work legally and ethically and answer short answer questions relating to your practices and interactions whilst on Work Placement.

When: You will complete this task before and during their work placement.

Where: In a regulated early childhood education and care service.

Resources and equipment: You will need access to a laptop/ tablet/computer to complete the responses to written questions.

Access to Work Placement Supervisor and service policies and procedures.

The student must have access to; National Quality Framework and National approved Learning Framework.

CHCPRT001: Skills must be demonstrated in the workplace.

In addition, simulations and scenarios must be used where the full range of contexts and situations cannot be provided in the workplace or may occur only rarely. These are situations relating to an emergency or unplanned procedures where assessment in these circumstances would be unsafe or is impractical.

  • Simulated assessment environments must simulate the real-life working environment where these skills and knowledge would be performed, with all the relevant equipment and resources of that working environment.

Part 3: Work Legally and EthicallyShort Answer Questions

1a. Identity, access and read the service policy that informs you of what to do in an emergency evacuation.

If you can take part in an evacuation drill, document what happened.  Otherwise, summarise the service emergency evacuation policy in your own words outlining roles and responsibilities and information about how the service ensures the safe evacuation of babies, toddlers, and adults.

b. Evaluate the effectiveness of the simulated evacuation rehearsal or policy using the service evaluation procedure. Did the evacuation run smoothly and did everyone know what their role was? Were the children supported, kept safe and secure at all times? Were all children, staff, and visitors accounted for, how?

c. Suggest one strategy that the service could implement to improve the effectiveness of the evacuation procedure. Discuss this suggestion with your WP Supervisor and include their feedback.
