The company cited a global drop in demand for aluminum as the cause of the
redundancies. Jim had been with the factory for 30 years. He had joined as a
twenty-year-old machine operator. All of the men who were made redundant
were 40 years old or more and they live in a town of 7,500 people in rural
Queensland.
Jim has been devastated by the redundancy. He has no contact with his former
workmates. He spends most of his day at home. Jim’s wife has been able to get
some part-time cleaning work. She did not work when Jim was working. Jim
feels very bitter about the redundancy payment. He feels the company
cheated on the men.
Jim has been under treatment with his local doctor for increasing migraines.
The doctor has referred Jim to the local community health center to see him.
